Over the last month there has been an increase in Burglaries in Peterborough.

The majority of these crimes have been committed by offenders getting in through unlocked doors or windows or from taking garden implements stolen from insecure garden sheds and then using these items to open patio doors.

The Home Office have recently provided advice on protecting your homes which can be found at www.homeoffice.gov.uk.  There is an online test to discover how secure your home is and offers you crime reduction advice based on the results of the test. To help you keep your home safe, they
have put together a useful pack of information about securing your property. You can order your home pack by calling 0800 456 1213 and quoting 'burglary pack'. Those who order the pack will also receive a discount voucher for home security supplies at a major DIY retailer, alternatively, you can download many documents from the pack on their website.

The Police and Safer Peterborough Partnership are raising awareness on home security and offer their top Crime prevention tips below:
· Fit strong locks to external doors and windows and keep windows and doors locked. (even whilst in your home)
· Always remove all keys from inside locks, and keep them out of sight and in a safe place
· Make sure your doors and frames are strong and in good condition -
wood doors should be at least 44mm thick and Fit sturdy deadlocks (British Standard BS3621) to all doors
· Fit a door chain or bar and door viewer (spy-hole), and use them.
· Install outside security lighting; if other people can see your property a burglar may think twice
· Install anti lift locks on patio doors. (Check your warranty on PVC doors to ensure you purchase the correct locks)
· Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place such as under
the doormat, in a flowerpot or behind a loose brick - thieves know to look
there first
· Install padlocks and alarms on sheds.
· Chain items together in sheds to hinder there removal.
· Keep your tools and ladders securely locked up – a burglar could use them to get into your house
· Mark and register your property. Items should be marked with Ultra
Violet pens or property marking products and keep a list of what you have
marked. . Having it marked helps police verify it's been stolen Take photos of anything valuable.
· Register your property on a free service called Immobilise. This is a free national service where you can register your items online. This assists in returning stolen items to the rightful owners. To register visit www.immobilise.com.
· When you are out in the evening, leave your lights on and shut the curtains
